Wits Ladies team just too good for the relegation threatened Birds

The crushing defeat suffered by Blue Birds Ladies at the hands of Wits Ladies in the Gauteng Sasol Women’s League match at the Alexandra Stadium on July 24 has deepened relegation worries for the Alex side and only magic can save them now from the dreaded drop

A too good Wits ladies side has deepened the relegation worries of Blue Birds after it walloped the hapless Alex outfit 6–1 in a Gauteng Sasol Women’s League match at the Alexandra Stadium on July 24.

Wits almost scored a goal in just a few seconds of the start of the game as it was the first to ask questions on the Birds goalkeeper, Zamelihle Mthembu. That scenario of Wits asking questions first was immediately cancelled by Birds’ Anele Hlongwane though she decided to pass the ball to a teammate instead of thundering a shot and force the keeper to save.

In just 30 minutes of play, Wits’ Lesego Nkoane was the first to register her name on the scoreboard as she thundered a shot that left Birds keeper in sixes and sevens as the ball rattled the back of the net.

Hlongwane had a promising opportunity to level the score with a one-on-one with the Wits keeper when she thundered a grass cutter that was unfortunately cleared off the line by Wits’ Lerato Sibasa.

The Beautiful Birds then fouled a Wits forward inside the box and the referee never hesitated in pointing to the penalty spot and Nkoane raised her hand to take the spot kick that registered her brace of the day.

From then on it just rained goals as the Wits side ran circles around the Birds defence and counting the opportunities missed, Wits could have easily annihilated the Beautiful Birds by a dozen goals.

The two teams went to the half-time break with Wits leading 3–0 after its Thato Mofolo added a third in referee’s optional time. Wits’ Mofolo started the second half where she left off as she almost got her brace as well had she not ballooned her effort over the crossbar.

Wits’ Shakeerah Jacobs registered her name on the scoreboard and so did Bontle ‘Sphithiphithi’ Sebila. A Birds player committed dangerous play on the edge of the box and Wits’ ‘Sphithiphithi’ opted to take the free kick and made no mistake and added her name on the list brace scorers of the day.

Birds’ consolation goal came from the boot of Moyahabo Khumalo in the dying seconds of the game. But that was not enough to ease the worries as coach Katlego ‘KG’ Malaka was devastated by the loss, saying it further fuelled the relegation worries for his side.

“I cross my fingers we win the next match to ease those blues and maybe survive relegation.”
