One of six youngsters from Alexandra on a football development trip in Palestine along with 14 of their Cape Town compatriots, has died following what is believed to have been a drowning incident in that country on July 17.

Sad news coming from Palestine is that one of the six youngsters from Alexandra on a football development trip in that country has died.

Kabelo Masalesa, one of the talented boys on the trip who is an U13 player for Black Poison, is said to have drowned in a pool in the afternoon of July 17 after the boys had returned from a soccer session and decided to cool off with a swimming stint.

KB, as he is fondly known in football circles in Alex, is one of six youngsters along with their 14 compatriots from Cape Town who are on a football development trip in Palestine to participate in soccer matches with their counterparts from that country.

The Alex youngsters were selected from a Free Palestine Solidarity Football Tournament that was held in Alexandra early this year by the Embassy of the State of Palestine and involved U13 teams from the township.

According to the secretary general of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Malvin Khumalo, who is accompanying the youngsters on the trip, said he has been in contact with the family of the late KB back at home, along with his club and has informed all the parties of the sad news.

A family member is expected to arrive in Palestine any day now as part of the repatriation of the body back to South Africa, Khumalo said, adding that investigations by police officials from Palestine around the circumstances that led to the Kabelo’s death were still in progress.

Khumalo said the other boys were hardly coping following the incident and the boys have asked to play their last match in honour of KB. They are due to return home on July 22. May his soul rest in eternal peace was all his teammates could say, Khumalo added.
