Like many great managers, Sam Ndlovu’s focus has always been about the people before thinking about himself or about the money. Ndlovu’s journey with the Sandton Action Sports Arena started out from a completely different position before being dubbed the night manager.
Born and raised in Alexandra, the man with the big heart started out as a chef in the establishment 11 years ago “When I started here, I was a chef. Then the management at that time saw potential in me and decided to appoint me in a new position which was arranging game fixtures and dealing with the fees. I think that I made a good impression because afterwards they said, ‘Sam, we need you to be our night manager at the arena’ and that is how it all started.”
Ndlovu did not hesitate to share some of his challenges that he faces, especially in today’s economy. “Everyone has their own battles that they are facing and for me that would definitely be the presence of load-shedding. We have lost a lot of money due to the expenses of our generator. Diesel is not cheap as we all know. In cases where the generator is not operating, we sadly have to make a painful decision to cancel some games. The painful part is having to apologise to each individual who came to have a good time. I am grateful that I am well trained for any possible event.”
Despite the presence of the inevitable darkness, the entire management of the arena have been able to ‘supply’ fun to the players by spending most of their funds toward the generator.
Ndlovu concluded by stating why he loves his current position at the arena, “My main role over here is to interact with the customers and to make sure that everyone is happy by making sure that everything’s in order. That is my passion and I love what I do.”
