A rented room in a house on Sweeper Street, Ext 7 in the Far East Bank caught fire on June 28 at about 11:00.
Landlord Aaron Ginya said two families rented a bedroom each in the two-bedroomed house. “I suspected the fire started in one of the bedrooms as it was badly damaged including the roof. Nothing was saved in the room and the smoke travelled across the house,” Ginya said.
One of the tenants whose room was not damaged, Emilda Tichivangana said she was called while at work and told the house had caught fire around the time that the electricity came back after load-shedding.
“We are still not sure what caused the fire because even the other tenants claimed they only saw the smoke, and they were not convinced that it could have been triggered by the return of the power as they had left all appliances unplugged soon after the electricity was turned off,” she said.
The victims, who lost everything in the fire, pleaded with the community to come forward with whatever assistance they could provide. “Some have donated mattresses and blankets and it will surely go a long way, and we are grateful for that,” Tichivangana added.
