Alex SAPS turns to divine intervention as crime soars

Sometimes crimes are not only solved when the police arrest one culprit but also as a prayer to fix the community as a whole.

Pastors from several churches in Alex, in collaboration with SAPS in Alexandra and Johannesburg District, turned to prayer in the hope that divine intervention would curtail the spiralling crime in the township and used the Divine Intervention Approach to dedicate a prayer for community crime prevention at Alex Police Station.

Pastor Nkosinathi Ntabeni said the idea of turning to divine intervention was adopted in August 2017 by former national police commissioner Khehla Sithole, who realised that crime had grown beyond them as the police and wanted to bring religious leaders into the fold to fight the scourge.

Sergeant Mzwakhe Xazi of the Johannesburg District’s Social Crime Prevention and Sergeant Virginia Kwinda of the Alexandra Social Crime Prevention also attended.

Pastor Vince Sello conducted the intervention, delivering the Word of God around the Bible verses that define the value of prayer in the community.

The prayer items that were included in the intervention were: prayer for unity in order to overcome; revival in our city; peace in our city; compassion in our community; softened hearts and forgiveness; killing of police to end; unity within Alexandra police management and all police officers; eradication of corruption; wisdom in Alexandra police management; crime and gender-based violence and femicide.

“On behalf of the station commander and the management of Alex police I would love to pass my gratitude to all the pastors who are here, and who honoured the invite, and took their time to pray for our station,” concluded Kwinda.
