Activate trains community leaders on how to be active citizens

Alex stakeholders are trained on how to be active citizens and they were also given skills on how to better manage and defuse tensions that often arise in communities.

Activate Change Drivers partnered with Khulisa Social Solutions to train community leaders to better handle some of the conflict situations that tend to arise in their communities.
The three-day training took place at Ikamvalethu Opportunity Centre in 8th Avenue on May 23.

“Khulisa is a non-profit organisation that deals with peacemaking and restorative justice programmes here in Alexandra township following the 2021 July unrests in Alex and other parts of South Africa,” said Thabo Mopasi, a community stakeholder relations officer in Alexandra.
Kgotso Sothoane, the special projects manager at Activate Change Drivers, said the aim of the training was to equip community leaders with information and skills to use to defuse tensions within the community.

“We deliver the training on civic education to various civic society organisations around Alex as we seek to empower citizens to be able to respond to the challenges they face in their communities,” said Sothoane

“We want to ensure that everyone understands the roles they need to play in the community. Our organisation, in partnership with Khulisa, will monitor how the organisations we workshop [with] use the same knowledge acquired during the training sessions to better their communities.”
