Stop-gap Joburg Mayor Mpho Moerane dies

The late Mpho Moerane was a student activist in Alexandra against apartheid under the structures of the ANC and rose through the ranks to become the Alexandra Zone 13 treasurer and later chairperson before moving over to the Johannesburg regional structure of the party as treasuer.

Former Alexandra Zone 13 ANC leader and stop-gap Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Mpho Moerane succumbed to his injuries on May 18 following a car crash on May 9.

A born and bred Alexandrian, Moerane was 52 at the time of his death.

“Mpho was a well-known activist full of life, determined and committed to working for his community. The family would like to acknowledge the continued outpouring of messages of support by the public and formations.

“We appeal that at this moment his family is afforded the time and space to reflect and reconcile on overcoming this tragedy,” said family spokesperson Mike Maile in a statement.

“We will endeavour to inform the public on all due arrangements. The family will liaise with all relevant structures accordingly and we urge everyone to keep them in their prayers.”

Before his death, Moerane served as a regional treasurer of the party in Johannesburg and was one of the candidates expected to stand for the regional chairperson’s job in Johannesburg during its upcoming conference.

This after being zonal treasurer in Alexandra before becoming the chairperson, and then joining the Johannesburg regional structure of the party in 2018 as treasurer.

He also served as a Member of the Mayoral Committee during the tenure of the late Mayor Geoff Makhubo, and later under Jolidee Matongo who had replaced the late Makhubo.

When Matongo died in a car crash, Moerane was elected Mayor of the City of Johannesburg for a month in October 2021 just before the Local Government Elections on November 1, 2021.

In Alexandra, Moerane was also on the board of what was then the Alex Clinic for several years and also a member of the board of the Sankopano Community Centre.

Moerane, who passed away at Milpark Hospital, is survived by his wife Fikile, four children, a mother and siblings.
