Stay safe this winter

As winter approaches, members of the community are encouraged to plan their commute ahead if you need to walk a distance in the dark.

The SAPS shares the following safety tips for commuters this winter:

• Make someone aware of your movements – let a family member or trusted friends know where you’ll be walking and when you expect to arrive.
• Choose appropriate footwear – wear sensible shoes that will allow you to make a quick getaway.
• Wear bright clothing or reflective bands – make sure you can be seen when crossing roads.
• Stick to public areas where you can be seen – don’t take shortcuts through deserted areas if it can be avoided.
• Stay aware of your surroundings – don’t wear earphones or have your eyes on your phone, as you’ll be less likely to notice suspicious people or cars around you.
• Walk in the direction of oncoming traffic – always walk facing traffic so you can see cars coming towards you and vehicles can’t pull up behind you.
• Keep your valuables hidden – don’t walk around with any valuables out on display.
