Alex launches The Kacev Family Library
I wish every child gets an opportunity to grow up in a library and there shouldn't be a difference between a child from King David Schools and Alexandra, says Ruele.
King David Schools Foundation together with various sponsors opened Alex’s first community library on March 31 at the Alexandra Development Centre also known as the Twala Centre.
Rabbi Ricky Seeff, general director at King David Schools, said The Kacev Family Library as it is known will serve as the first community library in Alex and will be a free library where children from the neighbourhood will come to read the books available.
“They won’t be able to take the books home, because we don’t have the system yet to allow us to lend them the books to take home,” he added.
“Our leader Rabbi Craig Kacev worked for the education sector in Johannesburg for 20 years, and he left the country so we wanted to pay tribute to him and we thought of an educational project as a way to pay tribute to him while giving back to the community.”
He said they work with a group of schools to try and uplift them. “We find a place where there’s no library and where kids don’t have a place to learn how to read and access books and we thought of Alex as it is on our doorstep and decided to help.”
Lawrence Ruele, the Leopard at Phuthaditjaba, said in his speech, “This is a great initiative for us as it allows us to pass on what Mr Twala has been doing for 55 years – to nurture and look after the children.”
Phuthaditjaba was founded by the Alex legend Linda Twala and has contributed a lot to the launch of the library along with the Leopards who worked tirelessly to see the library was operational.
“With performances from the Field Band Foundation, the Morning Star Brass Band, and poetry from our Leopard Cubs at Phuthaditjaba, plus a heartfelt speech from the amazing Jarred Wood. The youth of Alexandra outdid themselves,” Ruele concluded.
