Outreach programme educates community to save water

ALEXANDRA – The Department of Water and Sanitation urged people to use water wisely as Alexandra had issues of water scarcity.

City of Johannesburg Region E and the Department of Water and Sanitation hosted a community outreach programme to educate Alex residents on using water wisely and electricity, at Alex Mall on March 14.

Representatives of Johannesburg Roads Agency, City Power, City of Johannesburg, Johannesburg Water, City Parks and social workers of River Park Treatment Centre were also present at the event.

Oscar Bungeni, a community development supervisor at the Department of Water and Sanitation, urged people to use water wisely as Alexandra had issues of water scarcity. Referring to the Jukskei River which runs through Alex Bungeni said, “A lot is happening in that river so we are here to ask people to take care of that river so it takes care of us. Let’s not build next to the river, it is very dangerous to our lives,” he said.

Themba Mthethwa of City Power spoke to the community about the importance of paying for their electricity and using it sparingly as Alexandra had major electricity problems. “If you see anyone doing illegal connections, please dial 0800 002 587 and report them.”

Tumisho Matsane, a community engagement officer said, “The event was a success. I’d love to thank all the entities and the departments that supported us throughout the planning and executing of the event… we were very welcomed by the community and they allowed us to interact with them.”
