Jukskei River Warriors in Alex to be fed

These are people who volunteer their labour without expecting any form of remuneration at all, says Nthane.

Alex Water Sanitation and Environmental Community Forum has appealed to NGO Londani Lushaka to consider including its more than 200 volunteers in its feeding scheme.

The call was made by the chairperson of the forum, Lebo Nthane, during a recent tour of the NGO’s premises off 12th Avenue behind the Thusong Youth Centre to mark the honour of praise for looking after its Covid-19 sanitation tank donated by Heineken through the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Nthane, who was on tour along with her forum entourage and a representative of the department Shoki Malepe, said the forum would like to strike a partnership with Londani where its volunteers can also get meals from the NGO after their selfless work of cleaning the Jukskei River three times a week.

“I am sure we can come to some sort of arrangement with you to ensure we include our volunteers in the feeding scheme project. These are people who volunteer their labour without expecting any form of remuneration at all and I think it would be proper to also include them in the scheme just to replenish the energy used in cleaning the river,” Nthane said.

Known as the Jukskei River Warriors, Nthane said the warriors can also be used for a job that Londani would like done to carefully redirect stormwater to its garden to benefit its vegetables and at the same save its own water bill.

Londani project manager Alice Modiri welcomed the proposal to form a partnership with the warriors, saying they already work hand in hand with a number of other NGOs such as the Thusong Youth Centre and Ratang Bana in Ext 9 of the Far East Bank section of the township.

“We have struck a partnership with these organisations to share whatever donations and stuff we get among ourselves,” Modiri said, whose NGO Londani Lushaka is Venda for ‘caring for the nation’.

So far, she said, the arrangement is working so well for all, especially during lean times as one of the organisations may have sufficient donations that can be shared among the three NGOs while others wait for their donors to drop them some items.
