Alex showcases its creativity through storytelling

Alex Theatre Company and Academy brings stories to the community.

The Alex Theatre Company and Academy in partnership with the Gauteng Film Commission hosted an Alex Creative Day on March 31 at the San Kopano Centre.

“The Alex Theatre Company and Academy took this initiative and invited the Alex community to come and share this day,” said Archie Matsetela, who is the director at the academy.

He added that they had performances from their company members, who did about five theatre performances during the day ranging from drama, music, and dance.

“We are in partnership with the commission so we will be showing local films in the next six months at the San Kopano Centre. Every month we will invite people from Alex and even outside to come and view the films.
“We thought storytelling cannot die because of Covid-19 and society can learn a lot from films and theatre performances because we talk a lot about societal issues.”

Entry to the film screening and theatre performance is free and they also offer complimentary popcorn to the audience. “Everyone is allowed to come and view the films, depending on the parental guidance requirement of the film. If the age limit is over 13, then children will not be allowed.

Matsetela concluded, “This particular one [was] for the whole family and, since it [was] still school holidays, we decided to show a movie that is rated for everyone so the children too can come and watch it. The movie is called Letters of Hope directed by Vusi Africa.”
