Donation is a joy for all

ALEXANDRA – Whatever you have given us today, will also be shared among us and other children outside this home, says mam’uPeggy.

Kaya 959 and SPAR handed a cheque of R50 900 to the Leratong Joy for One Foundation that runs an orphanage home in Alexandra.

The home has been in operation for the past 26 years after it was founded by Rosebank Church which later left the township due to ongoing political unrest.

The home was left in the capable hands of Peggy Chauke who used to work under the church. Now 72 years old and wheelchair-bound, mam’uPeggy, as she is respectfully known in Alexandra, was on hand to welcome her guests and receive the donation on January 18.

The donation was the proceeds from the annual Soul Inspired Concert hosted by Kaya 959 on December 5 last year. The virtual concert was free of charge but viewers were asked to kindly make donations toward the foundation, to which all the proceeds of the concert were given.

The donation will go toward ensuring the children have food, school uniforms, toiletries and many other basic necessities that they require to lead a normal life that will allow them to momentarily forget their predicament.

Welcoming her guests, mam’uPeggy shared her life story of growing up in Alexandra, which she said was still largely a norm even today. “I grew up sleeping under the bed of our parents while my brothers slept under the dining table in a one-roomed house and whatever we had or got, we shared it among ourselves and other children outside our home.

“Whatever you have given us today, will also be shared among us and other children suffering out there, outside our own home – Leratong Joy for One. We are so grateful for the kind gesture and may the Almighty bless you all.”
