Newborn found inside toilet in Far East Bank

FAR EAST BANK – The child was taken to a nearby hospital where he is receiving care.

Police are investigating a case of child abandonment after community members found a newborn baby inside a toilet in Far East Bank.

Alexandra Police Station Commander Brigadier Lindiwe Magudulela said, “I can confirm that on February 24 at about 20:30, community members found a newborn baby abandoned in the toilet.

“They brought the child to the station. A case of child abandonment was opened.”

Social worker and manager of the Kidz Clinic in Alexandra, Elizabeth Mokoena appealed to the community at large to ensure that whoever is responsible, is taken to the police station so they can be held responsible. She said, “Anyone who knows of someone that was pregnant but does not have a baby with them can ask that person what happened and if they do find that is the person that did this to the baby, they can then bring them to the police station or call the police and report them.”

Mokoena is also a coordinator of victim support and empowerment at the Kidz Clinic, stationed at Alexandra Police Station.

Magudulela advised expectant mothers, “Concealment of birth and child abandonment is a crime. If a woman does not want a child, she can approach [the Department of] Social Development for assistance even before the child is born.”

The child was taken to a nearby hospital where he is receiving care. No one has been arrested but an investigation is ongoing.
