Contralesa declares May 8 as Ancestors’ Day

ALEXANDRA – Our partnership with Castle Milk Stout will seek to advocate for the official recognition of African spirituality, says Mkiva.

Alexandrians have been urged to savour the richness of their African culture with the newly introduced Ancestors’ Day on May 8.

For the first time in SA history, the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) in partnership with Castle Milk Stout along with the South African public, took a stand and gave recognition to African spirituality by declaring May 8 as Ancestors’ Day.

“Celebrating this day is an opportunity for different cultures to come together for a common cause that has great potential to elevate African spirituality to another level,” said Castle Milk Stout brand manager Khensani Mkhombo at a press conference in Alex to launch the day.

“It may not be an official holiday as yet but people who are serious about African culture and their ‘Africaness’ will take this day to heart and embrace it. We celebrate all sorts of holidays in this country, some of which have no bearing on us as Africans but we simply embrace them.”

Mkhombo said to ensure this day was recognised as other religious holidays were, a petition had been created and could be signed on the brand’s website www.castlemilkstout.co.za

“I urge all of you to go and sign the petition for the sake of your ‘Africaness’ and your culture,” she implored those present at the launch party.”

Zolani Mkiva, spokesperson for Contralesa said campaigns such as Ancestors’ Day came from the realisation that African spirituality was not given the same recognition as other religious holidays and practices.

“Through our partnership with Castle Milk Stout, we seek to shine a spotlight on the resurgence of African spirituality and advocate for the official recognition of African spirituality,” Mkiva added.
