Last hurdle for the Balfour Park Greek Queens

BALFOUR PARK – Please keep your fingers crossed for us as we have been trying this for many years, says Athanassouli.

The Balfour Park-based Gauteng Sasol Women’s League team Croesus Ladies are part of four teams that are through to the semis of the Sasol League National Championship currently underway in Durban.

A thrilled manager of the side Maria Athanassouli said she was proud of the girls and the road they have travelled with the club and looked forward to winning this hurdle which will see the club promoted to the National Women’s League’s Hollywoodbets Super League in the coming season.

“If we win this last hurdle, it will be a momentous achievement for the girls and the club and all our supporters, fans and friends. Please keep your fingers crossed for us. We have been trying this for many years without success and finally, we are almost there,” she told Alex News.

The Greek Queens, as they are popularly known in the City of Gold and its Golden Province – Gauteng – which is Sesotho for a place of gold, are the semi-finals of the championships along with three other teams, Lindelani Ladies, City Lads Ladies and Vasco Da Gama Ladies.

The champions and runners-up of the championship will also gain promotion to the Hollywoodbets Super League. The championship-winning team walks away with a cool R200 000 for their efforts while the runners up will take home R100 000 and R60 000 for the team that finishes in the third position.

In the first semi-final match today, Lindelani Ladies take on City Lads and the Greek Queens will come up against Western Cape’s Vasco da Gama Ladies, to decide on which two teams gain promotion to the Hollywoodbets Super League.

To reach the semis, Croesus bossed TS Galaxy Ladies to record their second win of the tournament to finish atop Group B. They beat the Mpumalanga side 2–0 courtesy of goals from Lerato Makhanya and Mpho Rammala.
