Alex forum to meet Water and Sanitation Minister

ALEXANDRA – Mopasi says forum is deeply disturbed by issues that continue to pollute the already over-polluted Jukskei River.

Alex Water Sanitation and Environmental Community Forum is scheduled to meet Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu in March to talk about wetland and sewage problems bedevilling the township.

This was disclosed by the forum’s secretary-general Thabo Mopasi during an Alex News interview, in which he cited numerous instances of sewage that continued to spill into the Jukskei River and no one took ownership.

“As a forum, we’re deeply disturbed by the issues which continue to pollute our already over-polluted river that causes a serious health risk to the community of the township and those living downstream,” said Mopasi, who was accompanied by his deputy Flora Mahlaba and chairperson Lebo Nthane.

Recently, Mopasi and his team were barred from participating in an inspection of the disused Alex Waste Water Treatment Plant on January 14 which Mopasi alleged had become a dumping place for bodies.

Mopasi claimed they were accused of being ‘loudmouths and not desired’ at meeting held before the inspection by some officials of the Region E offices.

Another hot potato was the decimation of the bird sanctuary and wetland next to Skeen Primary School in Ward 105. “We want to share all these problems with the minister for his possible intervention on the matters,” Mopasi said.
