Alex’s own ‘Mother Teresa’ to get her street

ALEXANDRA – Bapela hopes and prays that one day Dr Manganye can be honoured while she still lives to witness it.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Deputy Minister, Obed Bapela has told birthday girl and Itlhokomeleng Home for the Aged founder Dr Marjorie Manganye about longstanding plans to name a street after her.

Speaking at a celebratory party for Manganye and a resident of the home, Susan Minnie (84) who has lived at the home for more than 15 years, Bapela said these plans have often been scuppered by the constant change of governance in the City of Johannesburg.

Bapela said the plan was to rename the Wynberg section of Arkwright Avenue, formerly named London Road, after Dr Manganye.

London Road was renamed Vincent Tshabalala Road more than a decade ago but another section of this road opposite Alex Mall going towards Linbro Park is still named London Road. Bapela said it was proposed that this section of the road should also be renamed after Dr Manganye who was best known as ‘Mother Teresa of Alex’.

“The renaming processes are quite elaborate as they have to move several departments and agencies before being approved, starting with the City of Johannesburg.

“I hope and pray that one day we can honour you [Dr Manganye] while you still live with us, only if we can get stable governance in place in the City.”
