Alex High still the kingpin of matric pass rate

ALEXANDRA – An educational indaba is coming to the township on February 18 at the Sankopano Centre to iron out hindrances to progress.

Alexandra High School has maintained its status as the kingpin of matric performance in the township for a second year running.

The school toppled KwaBhekilanga Secondary School from the top spot after it had held the title for nearly a decade but the good news is that KwaBhekilanga also clung to its second spot.

Alex High’s current rating is 84.1%, coming down from last year’s 87.1% and second spot KwaBhekilanga has 79.4%, down from 82.9% while third-placed Realogile High has 78%, and also down from 78.6%, fourth-placed Minerva Secondary School has 65.6%, down from 80.8% last year.

Tail-ender for the third year in a row of the five high schools is East Bank High with 62.7% although the school’s only consolation is that it moved a couple of notches up from last year’s 49.2% to this year’s 62.7%.

Alex educational issues monitor Thabo Mopasi told Alex News that although the schools’ pass rate declined, it came on the backdrop of what he called the most difficult two years of Covid-19, which impacted the current Matric Class of 2021 more.

“We must commend the schools for making the best of a difficult two years. Many people did not give this Class of 2021 a chance and there were even calls for the scrapping of examinations,” Mopasi said.

He said an educational indaba in the township would be held on February 18 at the Sankopano Centre to deliberate on what needs to be done to turn the township’s education fortunes around.

“We also want to reinstate the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign in all the 19 schools in the township and to work closely with the SGBs and ensure they are provided with the necessary skills and resources to perform at their maximum,” Mopasi concluded.
