Alex police receive vehicle to help victims of gender-based violence

ALEX – The car is not to be used to patrol crime hot spots.

The Alexandra South African Police Service (SAPS) hosted a multi-disciplinary launch of the 16 days of activism awareness campaign recently.

According to the station’s spokesperson, Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha, the day was kick-started at the police station with a prayer by the Police Chaplain, captain Maqinyane, followed by a candlelight ceremony in commemoration of people who passed away through HIV and AIDS. A moment of silence was observed to respect those who passed away as South Africa marked World AIDS day.

Later in the day, a gender-based violence (GBV) desk dedicated to combating the scourge of GBV was launched, with the introduction of a dedicated desk for survivors.

“All victims have to be treated with respect and dignity. They should be assisted in a victim-friendly room where their statements can be taken in private and where they can receive support. The service was officially opened by Alexandra station commander LV Magudulela and CPF chairperson Mabunda,” said Mbatha.

Alexandra Station commander Magudulela addressed the community by thanking those who donated the motor vehicle to Alex SAPS that will only assist the survivors of GBV. She further continued by saying the car is not to be used to patrol crime hot spots.

The 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children awareness campaign was jointly conducted at Alexandra mall with Alexandra pastors and stakeholders such as Bokamoso, Old mutual, perfect choice, woman+men against child abuse, men’s forum, Green Door ambassador among others.
