Alex’s disused plant now a crime den

ALEXANDRA -– Criminals hide in the overgrown veld to waylay people to rob them of their valuables and to rape women and girls, says Mopasi.

The decommissioned Alex Waste Water Treatment Plant in the Far East Bank has turned into a horrible place for dumping bodies and foetuses and performing unsavoury rituals.

A number of bodies and foetuses have been discovered at the site over the years and Alex Water Sanitation and Environment Forum secretary-general Thabo Mopasi said people were often killed elsewhere and then dumped there.

“Over many years of cleaning the site, we have discovered bodies and foetuses along with other unsavoury items from rituals that are performed on the plant site and left there.

“Criminals are using it as a crime den as they hide in the overgrown veld and waylay people on their way to and from work to rob them of their valuables, and in certain instances women and young girls are raped there as well,” Mopasi told Alex News in an interview along with his deputy Paul Mokoena and chairperson Lebo Nthane.

Mopasi said the forum had since postponed its plans to conduct a clean-up campaign of the plant until all stakeholders such as the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services and the Metro police have been properly consulted and approved of the clean-up campaign. The clean-up campaign was scheduled to take place on December 7.

“We have decided to postpone the clean-up event as we don’t want to put people in harm’s way by venturing into that plant as it is dangerous. All we did today [November 7] was to conduct a cleansing prayer next to the plant and go ahead with the removal of alien species and veld around it,” Mopasi said.
