Alex animator wants other creatives to join industry

ALEXANDRA – Tumelo Selamolela calls on Alex creatives interested in animation to contact him so he can introduce them to the project.

Alex content creatives have been urged to cash in and make hey while the sun shines in the lucrative international animation industry.

The call was made by Alex-born animator and panellist at the recent Fak’ugesi Digital Festival, Tumelo Selamolela. The festival was a celebration of innovation in digital technology, arts and culture in Africa, held at Tshimologong Centre in Braamfontein.

Speaking in an interview with Alex News, Selamolela considered himself a veteran of the animation game, having started at the age of 15 while at Highlands North Boys High School when his dad organised a studio he could work in and mentors to guide him.

“I never looked back ever since as I hated the idea of sitting on a corner of a street to do art and let alone try and sell it. Animation allows me to do digital art and encrypt it so no one can copy and duplicate it.

“Even selling the art is digitalised and customers all over the world can have access to your encrypted version, and if they love it, they then buy it and only then when they have paid fully you can you send them a bigger version that is also watermarked,” said Selamolela (35), who owns Digital Canvas Academy in Craighall in partnership with Animation School in Cape Town.

He said there were a number of safeguards against theft and duplication of the digital art to protect artists from potential thieves. “The beauty of digitally animated art is that the quality holds up and can be mass produced and sold on the internet, as opposed to fine art which one has to paint each piece that you want to sell.”
