Alex labelled a ‘hotbed’ of women abuse

ALEXANDRA – "I think I will be justified in calling our beloved township a hotbed of women abuse", says Lifeline employee.

A Tsutsumani Lifeline call centre employee has taken the fight against gender-based violence to heart and now goes beyond the call of duty to help those in need.

At the launch of the #NoExcuse ahead of the start of the 16 Days of Activism, Nomsa Papale said she considers the iconic township a ‘hotbed of gender-based violence in the City of Johannesburg.

Hardly a day goes by without victims of the abuse knocking on her door for help. “Each time I come home from work, I find scores of women waiting for me outside my gate, seeking for help and to share their abuse stories with me,” she said.

“I deal with many callers at work from Alexandra and if I add these women who come to my home for help to the list, I think I will be justified in calling our beloved township a hotbed of women abuse.

“This has made me a privileged person as I now have the honour of taking my work home with me for the scores of women I find outside my gate. I never tire, if people need help and I am the one to give it, so be it.”

Besides counselling the women on her doorstep, Papale said she was now targeting visits to taverns to spread the message of tolerance between men and women. “I will also include issues around HIV/Aids and the Covid-19 pandemic as a holistic package of services.”

A collaboration between Lifeline and Father A Nation organisation will see the opening of #NoExcuse Support Centre at KwaNobuhle Hostel on December 8.
