Drugs destroyed my glamorous music career, says former addict

ALEXANDRA – A former Alex drug addict says he now lives on the straight and narrow and would not like to see another person in that situation.

A reformed drug addict told participants of a City of Johannesburg World Aids Day Men’s Dialogue how his addiction destroyed his glamorous music career.

Thabiso Mojapelo gave testimony about the effects of drugs on young people during the dialogue which was held at the Children’s Library next to KwaMadala Hostel, corner of 3rd Avenue and Alfred Nzo Street.

“I lost everything I had accumulated during my music career, my bandmates, clothes, house, furniture and the little savings that had accrued from my blossoming career.

“I ended up stealing money from my mom’s bag, taking what I could lay my hands on in the form of ornaments in the house, kitchen utensils and other valuables in the home that I could sell to raise money to feed my addiction.”

But the good news is that Mojapelo is now a rehabilitated addict who has turned his drug addiction misfortunes into valuable lessons that he imparts to his peers and those below, so they don’t get attracted by drugs as they will get hooked.

“As a rehabilitated addict, I am now teaching schoolchildren and the youth about the dangers of drugs in the hope that they too don’t fall into the trap that I got myself into.

“As I now live on the straight and narrow, I would not like to see somebody in that situation I was once in. It’s a sorry state affairs that I would not wish for anyone.”
