Totalsports creates a sporting safe haven for Alex kids

ALEXANDRA – The Safe-Hub has given us the opportunity to show our commitment to this community, says Totalsports brand manager Darren Sobotker.

Totalsports continues to support initiatives that seek to create a safe environment where children of Alexandra can learn and excel in whatever they do.

The Totalsports Alex Safe-Hub is aimed at supporting local initiatives that seek to improve the lives and health of those living in disadvantaged areas corresponding to their vision that sports is inclusive and should be accessible to everyone.

This is the vision of Totalsports brand manager Darren Sobotker who said as a leading partner in the Alexandra Safe-Hub for Youth and Community Development, Totalsports was set to continue to help implement one of the largest and impactful development projects in South African communities.

“Safe-Hub is an initiative that we are very excited about and being a part of this inspiring operation has given us the opportunity to show our commitment to this community,” Sobotker said.

Together with major players in both public and private sectors such as the government and the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Totalsports’ end goal is to roll out 100 safe-hubs across the country, starting with Alexandra, Sobotker said.

This campaign is set to engage one million young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, creating 150 000 work and training opportunities and 200 000 permanent jobs.

Alex Safe-Hub recently held their opening ceremony together with late Johannesburg mayor Jolidee Matongo, key partners and members of the community.

The Safe-Hub facility is designed as a youth development ecosystem that serves as the anchor within the area and will host the following activities:

  • Afterschool and work recreation programmes
  • Business development services and training
  • Skills development, employment and entrepreneurship services and training, including accredited learnerships
  • Shared office space and start-up school
  • Health and wellness support services; digital and future skills programmes
  • Early childhood development services, and
  • Green economy services and training, including urban farming and waste management solutions.
