Alex’s Freedom Supermarket races against time for re-opening

ALEXANDRA – Morgan said he was confident of meeting the deadline so that Alex residents can once again enjoy shopping at their favourite discount store.

Construction workers at the Freedom Supermarket building are racing against time to reinforce the roof of the building which was badly damaged during the July looting spree.

This is in a race to ensure all is well for the reopening of the store to shoppers on November 19 for the first time since the outbreak of the looting.

The looting incidents were widely said to have been sparked by the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma following his defiance of a Constitutional Court order that compelled him to testify at the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations of State Capture.

According to site manager Gary Morgan, the roof of the supermarket, especially the section that houses tenant store Pep Stores, was badly damaged and needed reinforcing to bring it up to speed.

“Workers are busy with it now and we are racing against time to ensure it is ready and strong for the targeted reopening of the supermarket on the proposed date of November 19.

“I am confident we will be able to meet that deadline and Alex can once again enjoy shopping at their favourite discount store,” Morgan told Alex News during a recent tour of the shopping facility that is usually abuzz with shoppers.

While construction workers were busy with the reinforcement of the roof, other workers were putting the final touches to the supermarket shopping floor. They were finishing the tiling while some were polishing the sections that have already been tiled.
