Alex’s former buzzing supermarket on the verge of being rebuilt

ALEXANDRA – Township residents rely on the supermarket to supply them with groceries at a discounted price.

Freedom Supermarket in Wynberg could be open for business in two months’ time.

The supermarket was looted and destroyed by fire during the unrest in mid-July, resulting in the loss of an estimated 200 jobs of Alex-based residents.

Nick Obel, the spokesperson of Freedom Corner and Freedom Supermarket, said the supermarket was fully insured and would soon be under reconstruction.

“The moment our insurance company pays, work will commence, “ Obel added, “We are hoping to be open within two months of commencement.”

Obel said the entire supermarket had been gutted by fire and it would be rebuilt to the same high standards as it was prior to the riots.

“We are pressing the insurance company to expedite the process as many people and employees have suffered and continue to suffer as a result of the business being closed.”

The supermarket was one of the busiest supermarkets in Alex, and many residents in the township relied on it to supply them with groceries at a discounted price for the holiday season at the end of the year.

Obel added that many residents were eager to see the supermarket back to its buzzing days and the community had been helping to clean up the mess.

“We have always been very socially aware as a business and conscious of our important role in the community.

“We appreciate the support we have received from Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry to enable us to get the supermarket back up and running so we can resume providing the essential services to our community.”
