‘No silver bullet’ for youth unemployment

ALEXANDRA – The Youth Content Collective is an initiative that needs the support of all and sundry, says Hillie Meyer.

The challenges of youth unemployment plaguing the country have no silver bullet but needs the power of a collective to overcome.

These were the profound words of Metropolitan CEO, Peter Tshiguvho during the official launch of a training programme, Youth Content Collective, for the youth in Alexandra and other townships of Gauteng.

Situated at Alex Mall under the auspices of the Netcare Ulusha Hub, the Youth Content Collective project that started its operations in July, aims at empowering the youth with skills that will enable them to become active players in the economic and job space of the country. Skills will include photography, videography and filmmaking for youth aged between 18 and 35.

Issues around the joblessness of the youth in the country has set many tongues wagging and this worrying factor was exacerbated by the recent incidents of looting that engulfed the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, Alexandra being one of the epicentres.

“We need to address the issues of youth unemployment but we also need to guard against the piecemeal fashion of responding to it. We seriously need to pull our resources together as the public and private sectors in this country.

“There will be no silver bullet for the problem but the panacea lies in the power of the collective. No problem is insurmountable when we put our heads together to fight the recent looting scourge and destruction to rebuild our country and its economy,” said Tshiguvho in his call to corporates to pull together to tackle youth unemployment.

Tshiguvho appealed for the spreading of the message around the power of the collective in the hope that other companies would eventually come to the party as ‘together we can’.
