Women’s Day commemorates a victory won by 20 000 South African women doing a peaceful march to lift the restriction on needing ‘pass’ to move in certain areas, during the apartheid regime. Today, Women’s Day symbolises equality for women and is so revered that August is referred to as Women’s Month in South Africa.

The Alexandra Makeover Project joined forces with Scientology Volunteer Ministers, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alexandra Brass Band, and others to celebrate the rights and freedoms of women across the country.

To kickstart the event, the Alexandra Brass Band serenaded guests with memorable tunes that brought everyone together for the jovial activities.

Renowned Alexandrian philanthropist and influential community leader Linda Twala, thanked all the guests for the weeks of clean-ups they had done in order to rebuild Alex after going through the violent riots. Twala presented gifts to the volunteer ministers who, in turn, also gave gifts to Twala and his assistant, Lawrence Ruele.

Phineas Ramakgasa, an Alexandra Volunteer Ministers leader, said, “After all the cleaning and hard work we have been doing for the past weeks, we decided to halt it for today and dedicate today especially to all the wonderful women out there who continue to be an inspiration to us all.”

The volunteer ministers and the Alexandra Makeover Project have already cleaned up a shopping centre, various stores and more in the past weeks to rebuild Alex, and they vowed to continue until all is back to normal.
