Following the violent riots and looting in Alex, various community groups came together more united than ever to say ‘enough is enough.’
Clean-up crews rolled up their sleeves and began to tackle the mess created by looters which included Pan Africa Shopping Centre and Alex FM.
Various organisations bandied together in the spirit of Ubuntu to rebuild their devastated community.
The We Love Alexandra Community Makeover Project was one of the initiatives that took the leading role. Lawrence Ruele, vice-president of the project, organised volunteers who included members of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers NGO to help with the clean-up.
President of the project, Linda Twala said this was the beginning of rebuilding Alex. “Our goal is to rebuild Alexandra, but we will start by cleaning the township first in hopes that the residents will lend us a hand,” Twala added.
Ikasi Waste Management Solutions would collect the waste and its founder, Kamogelo Raphadu said this was the least they could do.
The organisations would continue to do daily clean-ups to bring the township back to its former glory.
