WATCH: Alex Mall back in business

ALEXANDRA – We are back and open for business again, says Alex Mall communications and marketing manager Ntokozo Bophela.

The only shopping centre in Alexandra to have survived the protracted mayhem of the looting spree that engulfed the township in the past four days has re-opened its doors to shoppers.

Alex Mall communications and marketing manager Ntokozo Bophela said the mall was back in business but only for essential goods and services. “We opened this morning and our loyal customers started streaming in to buy their essential items only,” said a delighted Bophela in an interview with Alex News.

Bophela said only grocery shops and essential services were open such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Roots Butchery, Clicks, Medical Society, Alexandra Medical Centre as well as all the ATMs in the mall. She added that the mall would be trading under a high alert environment with some restrictions on the number of people who could come into the mall and shops at any given time.

“No cars will be allowed into the grounds of the mall but only walk-ins,” she said. Only one gate will be open and it will function as both entry and exit, Bophela said, adding that the usual Covid-19 protocols of ‘no mask no entry’ and sanitisation of customers would be strictly adhered to.

The mall was saved by its security and the fact that cars were stopped from entering the grounds of the mall soon after the unrest broke out, coupled with the quick arrival of the army. “We would like to thank both our own security and the arrival of the army on the grounds, and not forgetting the people of Alexandra who also wished us safe in their prayers.”
