Who left the fridge open? Bitterly cold weather expected in Gauteng

JOBURG – Eskom warns the public to continue to use electricity sparingly despite the expected cold weather conditions.

The South African Weather Services warned the public of an intense cold front that is expected to hit the Western Cape and Northern Cape on Monday, July 12 and will spread to other provinces including Gauteng on Tuesday, July 13.

According to Gauteng weather, this is the first cold front of winter this year.

Temperatures in Johannesburg will reach a minimum of -1°C and a maximum of 12°C on Tuesday, July 13.

The South African Weather Service said they will continue to monitor any further developments relating to this weather system and will issue subsequent updates as required. The public is urged and encouraged to regularly follow weather forecasts on television and radio. Updated information in this regard will regularly be available at www.weathersa.co.za as well as via the SA Weather Service Twitter account.

Furthermore, Eskom has urged the public to continue to use electricity sparingly.

The power utility said it has not implemented load-shedding since June 13 due to some improvement in the performance of the Generation fleet and the system is currently performing relatively well. “However, the cold front will increase the demand for electricity thereby putting pressure on the power system. Therefore, Eskom urges the people of South Africa to help reduce electricity usage in order to ease the pressure on the system,” said Eskom in a statement on July 12.

Eskom will communicate promptly should there be any significant changes to the performance of the system.
