Asthma attack was an eye-opener for musician Kay Streets

ALEXANDRA – Asthma attack would have killed Damelin graduate if not for the Alex Clinic staff.

Musician and entrepreneur, Khomotso Grand Mothotsi, better known as Kay Streets, said if the Alexandra Community Health Centre staff had not intervened quickly and helped him, he would have died from an asthma attack.

Music has always been a passion for the 28-year-old Damelin graduate, and he could not imagine doing anything else besides standing before a crowd and expressing himself authentically.

His music career, however, nearly ended in 2017 when he collapsed from an asthma attack at Balfour Park Mall.

The sound engineering student told Alex News, “I transferred to Damelin Bramley to continue my studies after I graduated from Damelin Port Elizabeth with a sound technology certificate.

“I used to live at Highlands North, but Alex felt like home to me because all my friends used to live there, and it was where many of my fondest memories were created.

“In my case, I had an asthma attack that nearly ended my life. I don’t know what could have happened if it wasn’t for the nurses and doctors at the Alexandra Clinic.”

Despite wanting to get back into school and practise something he loves, Mothotsi had to take a break from it all after the asthma attack.

For him, the asthma attack was an event to motivating him to chase his dreams even harder.

The Streetsmart Muziq Entertainment company owner said his asthma attack provided him with an eye-opening experience. He said the thought of him dying before achieving his dreams terrified him.

He opened his Streetsmart clothing ZA store in 2018 and it suffered a great deal. Then, in 2019, he decided to do what he loves which is music, and received positive feedback from the internet, scooping him features in the Polokwane observer and The Capricorn Review.

It was to explore other endeavours that he decided he would take a break from music.

“Even though I was eager to learn the basics of product selling, I always knew that I would return to music.

“Unlike other journeys, the musical journey is not always smooth, One mistake can become a setback that takes years to overcome.”
However, he said he would not trade all those setbacks for anything in the world.

A recent single by him, Need you right now, has been playlisted by Alex FM.
