Township jazz giant Zacks Nkosi for box office movie

ALEXANDRA – Alex jazz icon Zacks Nkosi could soon be the subject of a box office movie.

If all goes according to plan, Alex arts creative Refilwe Pieterse will produce a movie on the township’s late jazz icon Zacks Nkosi.

“This is still a pipe dream as I am doing personal private research on a number of issues related to the production of the movie and what will be needed and how much it can cost.

“Once I have an idea of the issues and costs at play, I will endeavour to seek and commission professional researchers into the issues around the subject matter of the movie, the jazz icon himself Zacks Nkosi,” Pieterse told Alex News.

If funding could be made available, Pieterse said she was determined to produce a movie of international standards on the life of this great jazz giant and his rise to stardom.

Born Isaac Zakes Nkosi, but popularly known as Zacks in music circles, Nkosi was born in Alexandra in 1919, just six years after the township was founded, and died in 1978 after an illustrious jazz career.

His parents were said to have originated from Swaziland, now eSwatini.
