Alex takes its future into its own hands

ALEXANDRA – Twala says he is ready to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty to salvage the image of his beloved Alexandra.

The community of Alexandra, with the help of its wealthy neighbours in Sandton, is poised to embark on an arduous journey of bringing a new-look image that could see the iconic township dust away from its current status of filth and squalor.

“We are ready to roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty for the betterment of the community of Alexandra, for which I have worked so tirelessly for many years on various fronts,” Twala said in the aftermath of the launch of the makeover project.

The makeover of Alexandra has become a reality and all this is thanks to South Africa Day, a non-profit organisation based in Sandton, one of whose mandate is to support communities such as Alexandra to revitalise rundown infrastructure and beautify the area as a way to also attract investment to the area.

The makeover project of the Alex Chapter of SA Day was launched on 8 May and is now set to mark the first important step in the journey to transform the township to not only make it investor-friendly but more habitable especially for its community.

According to Dr. Bheki Shongwe, chief executive officer of South Africa Day, the makeover project is a partnership that involves the community, the government, and the business communities of both Alex and Sandton.

It focuses on four key areas; those being the cleaning and beautification of the township, embarking on community upliftment projects, driving or accelerating business and economic development, and fighting crime with the aim of making both Alex and Sandton become crime-free zones.

“As South Africa Day, we have the peace of mind in the knowledge that the project is in the good and capable hands of the leadership of the township’s foremost philanthropist and community builder, Linda Twala. He has lived the life of service to his community,” Shongwe said.
