Alex Chapter of SA Day launches

ALEXANDRA – Gogo Grace Vilakazi’s home on 15th Avenue will be the launch pad for the Alex Chapter of SA Day.

The Alex Chapter of South Africa Day which is spearheading a beautification initiative known as the We Love Alex Community Makeover Project will be launched on 10 April.

The chapter and the project will be launched at the home of 90-year-old Grace Vilakazi, where the chairperson of the chapter Linda Twala is currently involved in some construction and improvement work. The work includes building a toilet inside her house so that she does not have to walk to an outside facility.

Deputy chairperson of the chapter Lawrence Ruele told Alex News that the launch would commence at 10am with a public announcement for the community about the details of the project.
This announcement, Ruele said, will be followed by the arrival of guests from the business community in Sandton, led by the CEO of the Sandton-based NPO South Africa Day Dr Bheki Shongwe which is currently fundraising to finance the project under the Alex Investment Fund.

After mingling with community members and meeting gogo Vilakazi, Ruele said the guests would then embark on a sightseeing tour of Alex.

While the tour is being conducted, Ruele said community members would embark on a clean-up campaign and beautification of the 15th Avenue precinct around Alfred Nzo Street. Vilakazi’s house will also be cleaned and painted as a taste of what is to come under the We Love Alex Makeover Project, Ruele concluded.
