A ‘traumatic’ year for the whole universe

ALEXANDRA – Matrics say they did their best under difficult circumstances.

Most of the learners of the matric Class of 2020 in Alexandra have expressed satisfaction with their results despite what some described as ‘a traumatising year for the entire universe’.

Some of the learners spoke to Alex News soon after collecting their matric results from their schools on 22 February.

Koketso Letsoalo (18), one of the best performing learners at KwaBhekilanga Secondary School, has received a bursary from DSV Logistics and said he was going to study civil engineering at the University of Johannesburg.

Koketso, an accomplished footballer who plies his trade at Alex Black Aces, said he was not entirely pleased with his marks but happy that he managed to attain a bachelor’s degree pass that allowed him to study at
a university.

Asked about his recipe for success, Koketso, who lives on 4th Avenue, said it was ‘study, study and study’ all the way. “I want to believe had it not been for the outbreak of Covid-19 which restricted our access to the teachers, I could have done even much better.”

Chantel Makgamatha (19) said she did not do well in maths and geography but was hopeful of being accepted at varsity to study for her favourite career, law.

“Had it not been for this horrible year, maybe I would have done much better in those two subjects as well?

“If the worst comes to the worst, I will have to upgrade my marks this year so I can fulfil my dream of studying law,” said Chantel who lives in Tsutsumani Village.

Nomsa Mboweni (19) said she couldn’t wait to get home and show her mom her results while Nfihlo Chauke (18) of River Park said she had been accepted for a police course at the Jeppe College.

“I couldn’t wait to see my mom and show her my results as she kept pushing me to complete my matric, saying she did not want to die before I matriculated. I am already studying for a year-long HR management course,” Nomsa said.

Nyiko Makumbila (19) said she wanted to study nursing but her results are not so good. “I will have to write supplementary exams to improve my marks,” which she described as ‘bad’. “I suspect they will not take me [for nursing] with these kinds of results,” she added.

Melinda Magano (19) of Setswetla informal settlement in Marlboro said she obtained a senior certificate and was not sure what she will be doing. “I am still going to decide on my future plans,” she said.

East Bank High School’s Kgomotso Nyathi said despite the ‘traumatic’ year she was delighted with her pass marks which auger well for her desire to study for an LLB degree at the University of Johannesburg.
“I have already been accepted and all I am waiting for is NSFAS confirmation of funding which I have applied for already.”

Melinda Magano (19) of Setswetla informal settlement in Marlboro says she has not decided as yet on her future plans.

Kgomotso’s classmate Katlego Ramodike said she was happy with the results she achieved under the difficult conditions of Covid-19.

“I managed to reach my goal of a bachelor pass and I can now go and study for a degree in accounting at Turfloop University in Limpopo,” Katlego said.
