Alex Chapter wants to meet property owners

ALEXANDRA – The Alex Chapter of SA Day has resolved to meet property owners ahead of a mass meeting.

The Alex chapter of South Africa Day has expressed its resolve to meet with organisations that represent property owners in Alexandra regarding the proposed beautification project of the streets of the township.

This meeting will be over and above the proposed mass meeting of the community of Alexandra to discuss the project, said Muntu Mbanjwa, one of the members of the interim committee of the Alex chapter of South Africa Day which is spearheading the We Love Alex Community Makeover Project.

Mbanjwa added that it was important for the chapter to hold separate consultations with the property owners, not just as a sign of respect, but in recognition of their selfless struggle for several years in an effort to have the Alex properties returned to their rightful owners.

The properties were expropriated by the apartheid regime that wanted to build hostels for migrant labourers from within South Africa and beyond its borders who worked in the gold mines around Johannesburg.

“I propose that we meet the property owners before the mass meeting so we can have their buy-in first, after which we can call the mass meeting, and I am sure the property owners too will then be in a position to help us mobilise the township folk for this important gathering,” said Mbanjwa.

Mbanjwa’s proposal was seconded by Alex’s foremost philanthropist and community leader Linda Twala, himself a property owner, who said it was critical to have discussions with property owners before such a mass meeting was held.

“This noble project will not be threatened by anyone except people who own wards in this township, those who often tell me that I came to their ward and conducted ‘this and that’ without informing them,” Twala said.

Mbanjwa added, “The other lot who will pose a threat to this project are the hyenas waiting in the wings to snatch a kill.”
