Suspect arrested for high calibre weapons

LOMBARDY EAST – Sandringham Police and the JMPD officers discovered a hideout house where the suspect hid various weapons and stolen vehicles.


During an integrated operation by South African Police Services (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on 29 January, members of Sandringham Police Station spotted a suspicious vehicle in Lombardy East.

As the police members attempted to stop the vehicle, suspects opened fire on the police. The SAPS called for backup and a JMPD unmarked freeway patrol responded.

“The officers apprehended one suspect as he was jumping over a wall attempting to escape,” said JMPD’s spokesperson Wayne Minnaar. “Officers then discovered that the house where the suspect was running away from was a hideout. There the officers found two Ak47s, one R1 rifle and two pistols,” he said.

The officers also tested eleven vehicles which were found at the property, and three were to be found hijacked from various locations.

“The hijacked vehicles were taken to Aeroton Police Pound for verification. The suspect and weapons were taken to Sandringham Police Station where he was charged for possession of illegal firearms and for possession of hijacked vehicles,” said Minnaar.

The arrested suspect is set to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 1 February.
