Hope is on the horizon for Alex

ALEX – Rays of Hope has put 2020 behind them and says it looks forward to a better and brighter 2021.

Rays of Hope non-profit organisation CEO, Sihle Mooi reflected on the year and the impact of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Wow, what a year 2020 turned out to be,” he said. “Who would have thought it was going to turn out as it did? For the Rays of Hope family and all of our Alex partners, it’s been a tough road but definitely worth all the effort as we reflect on the impact that we have made.”

Alexandra, he said, was hard-hit by Covid-19, but the #Hope4Alex campaign, a Rays of Hope initiative, as well as the efforts of many kind and generous souls, had helped immensely.

Mooi added that Rays of Hope had partnered with more than 30 non-profit organisations across Alex, impacting more than 73 000 of the most vulnerable people. This effort never went unnoticed as it was even featured in the New York Times.

“We were also able to bring hope to grief, trauma and gender-based violence sufferers through counselling and educational materials to the young people, and it was all thanks to all of you.

“We are very excited that most of our regular programmes are starting up again after the harsh lockdown, bringing us closer to our own new normal. We are also looking forward to a well-deserved celebration with young people who are part of our programmes at the end of the year.”

With the public’s help, he said Rays of Hope could do even more next year. “For a monthly amount of R1 250, you can provide food, education, counselling and psychosocial as well as health-related support to a vulnerable person through Rays of Hope.

“For each person, the mix of services will look different, but it’s about moving the most vulnerable to the place of wholeness and independence.”

Mooi said all cash donations within South Africa were eligible for a Section 18A Tax certificate and corporates could claim B-BBEE points. International donations could be made through the GlobalGiving platform,

He thanked all those who made this year better for the community of Alexandra. “We truly appreciate and value every effort and sentiment both big and small. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and happy festive season with your loved ones, as we look forward to a better and brighter 2021.”
