Empress South Africa semi-finalist wants to help Alexandra youth

RIVER PARK – Covid-19 has seen a number of activities being cancelled, Empress South Africa has allowed the contestants to do all their activities online.

River Park resident Fortunate Mkhizwane is participating in an online pageant, Empress South Africa.

“I’ve always loved modelling even from a young age, this pageant is giving me that opportunity. I am hoping it will open doors for me in the modelling industry… I still wanna pursue my modelling career,” said Mkhizwane.

Covid-19 has seen a number of activities being cancelled and Empress South Africa has allowed the contestants to do all their activities online.

“We have been doing video challenges. The most recent video we did was a congratulatory message to our current Miss SA, Shudufhadzo Musida. Points are allocated for every video done,” said Mkhizwane.

Mkhizwane added that they were also required to find a charity they could work with and support. She has chosen the Hope Giving Organisation, an organisation based in River Park.

She said she entered the pageant with hopes of inspiring and showing the youth of Alexandra that it could be done. She also wished that someone would run a youth programme in the township.

“The Alexandrian youth is so talented but because of the lack of opportunities, most of them just end up giving up and choose the easy way out. Drugs amongst other things, rule the youth. A youth programme would benefit the communities greatly.”

Asked about the future of modelling, Mkhizwane said she saw a very bright future for upcoming models especially now that there were also plus-size models that were being embraced. “I’m proud of my body and I’m embracing that. I don’t feel any pressure to be any size because of how the community and the industry is embracing every body shape and size.”

The competition is now in its semi-finals stage with the finale to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton on 29 January next year.
