Parts of London Road in Alex closed due to protest action

ALEXANDRA – Two people, including a toddler, lost their lives in the recent fire that destroyed approximately 30 shacks.

Residents of Alexandra closed off London Road between 3rd and 6th avenues on 3 November.

The protest action follows after approximately 30 shacks in an informal settlement in 8th Avenue caught fire on 31 October. According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, residents are demanding communication from the City of Joburg and the councillor in the area.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson of Joburg EMS confirmed that a one-year-old toddler and a 30-year-old male lost their lives in the fire. “We still don’t know what caused the fire. I am sure the City will soon attend to the community,” he said.

“The protestors are not violent, but the road is completely closed off,” added Fihla. “All relevant authorities from Region E are here,” he concluded.

This is a developing story, more details to follow.
