Ward 107 PR councillor Moshe Mphahlele has been released on a warning after he was arrested for assaulting police officers from the Alexandra Police Station on 18 October.

The councillor appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 20 October. According to the station’s spokesperson, Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha, Mphahlele along with some community members, stormed the station on 18 October demanding the release of an alleged rapist.

Mbatha said that they wanted to take the law into their own hands, “The suspected rapist is currently under police guard at Tembisa hospital after being severely beaten by an angry mob for [allegedly] sexually assaulting two women, supposedly acting as a traditional healer after they went for a consultation.”

He added, “Mphahlele and the police got into a confrontation which led to the officers sustaining minor injuries, which then led to his arrest.”

Mbatha said as soon as the alleged rapist gets better in hospital, the police will continue with investigations.
