Police arrest son who allegedly strangled his mother

ALEXANDRA – Upon arrival, detectives from Alexandra police station were met with a gruesome scene of an elderly woman who seemed to have been suffocated.

Detectives arrested a suspect who allegedly brutally suffocated and strangled his mother to death on 26 August.

According to Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha, spokesperson for Alexandra Police Station, Alexandra SAPS’ operational members swiftly responded to reports of a murder in 16th Avenue. Upon arrival, they were met with a gruesome scene of an elderly woman who seemed to have been suffocated. Mbatha said they immediately arrested a 31-year-old suspect.

“The suspect arrived home during the early hours of the morning and found his mother lying in bed waiting for him. The mother asked the suspect why he is always coming home late. The suspect is said to have replied by stating that he was outside with his friends. The mother is then said to have started shouting at the suspect telling him to stop coming home late,” said Mbatha.

He added that the suspect was alleged to have become aggressive and started attacking the mother. “The suspect strangled his own mother with his hands, he closed her mouth and nose with his hands. He then took a sheet on the bed and covered her face and suffocated her shouting while repeatedly asking her why she was shouting at him.”

The suspect is said to have taken from the house a 50-inch Hisense television set worth R2 500 and a Samsung cell phone worth R500 and sold them to buy drugs.

Alex police conducted a thorough investigation that resulted in the recovery of the stolen TV and cellphone. The person that bought the stolen items was arrested for possession of stolen property.

The investigation is ongoing.
