Sassa grant payments to continue as normal despite Post Office’s financial restraints

The South African Post Office has communicated to social grant recipients that grant payments will continue as normal and will not be affected by the current financial restraints experienced by the Post Office.

This is after the South African Post Office’s retirement fund’s efforts to get the national postal service Post Bank to continue making contributions to the retirement fund fell on deaf ears. 

During the court proceedings on 21 September, it was heard that the postal service was under budget by 49 per cent highlighting that the institution was failing to collect money as a result of the Covid-19 regulations. 

“The SA Post Office experienced a dramatic reduction in revenue during the lockdown period and is currently looking at ways to improve cash flows,” said Post Office communications officer, Johan Kruger.

This sent waves of panic across social grant beneficiaries who collect their money through the institution. However, the South African Post Office has told social grants recipients that the grant payments will continue as normal and will not be affected by the current financial restraints experienced by the Post Office.

“The funds for social grants come from National Treasury through the Department of Social Development and are not funded from the revenue of the SA Post Office,” concluded Kruger.
