ALEXANDRA – Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said that no Pikitup employees were injured during the incident.

Police are investigating a case of assault that took place on Thursday, 30 July on London Road and 14th Avenue in Alexandra.

According to the spokesperson for Alexandra Police Station, Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha, the complainant said that he was driving a company bus, which is contracted to the waste-collecting company Pikitup, to pick up Pikitup employees when four cars stopped next to him. He explained that the occupants of the vehicles then got out and allegedly started to assault him.

Mbatha said that the driver added that the suspects told him that they have been asking him and his colleagues to stop picking up commuters with their buses. “They then allegedly attacked him and assaulted the passenger he was on the bus with using fists. The complainant also said that they stoned the bus windows – 13 bus windows were left damaged and their value amounts to R48 180 12,” explained Mbatha.

The suspects were driving a Nissan Navara, a white Toyota Avanza and a Toyota Tazz. The complainant could not take down the registration numbers of the cars as it was dark.

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi confirmed the incident. He said, “Because of Covid-19, we have had to arrange transport for our employees, I believe this may have disturbed the taxi operations in the area. The driver that was assaulted is an employee of the service provider that we procured to help our employees who were struggling with transport. The matter was taken up by the service provider to the police.”

Mkhwanazi also added that no Pikitup employees were injured when the incident happened.

No arrests have been made yet. An investigation is under way.
