IN PICTURES: EFF community leaders hand over demands to police, municipal offices and City Power

ALEXANDRA – Dramatic moments unfolded when police fired rubber bullets to disperse the marchers near the Alexandra Police Station and, at another point during the march, a Sandringham police vehicle overturned. More to follow on this story.

While the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had apparently planned a mass march today, 27 July, only community leaders were given the green light to march.

Alexandra Police Station spokesperson, Simphiwe Mbatha, explained the mass march was cancelled as large gatherings of people are prohibited under lockdown Level 3.

Among those marching was EFF proportional representative (PR) councillor, Moshe Mphahlele.

Ahead of the march last week, Mbatha had said, “The march may be linked to what happened on Tuesday, 21 July. City Power came and removed all the illegal electricity connections. Other than that, we were not aware.” The community of Alexandra has been experiencing electricity issues with some households reporting that they have not had electricity for over two weeks.

Those marching handed over memorandums to the Alexandra police, the municipal offices on 8th Avenue and City Power.

On arrival at the Alexandra Police Station, the station commander of Bramley Police Station, Colonel Owen King, received the memorandum from EFF PR councillor Moshe Mphahlele. Among the grievances listed was the high level of crime in the area.

Then, the group headed to the municipal offices on 8th Avenue to hand over another memorandum addressed to the City of Johannesburg’s executive mayor, Geoffrey Makhubo.

While escorting marchers, a Sandringham Police Station vehicle overturned in Kew on corners 10th Road and 4th Avenue. It is not yet known to the Alex News what caused the vehicle to overturn.
