NPOs work together to combat poverty in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Three organisations worked together to celebrate Mandela Day.

Three non-profit organisations combined forces to provide food parcels, blankets and other necessities to Alexandra residents on Mandela Day.

Social Youth Care, a non-profit organisation (NPO) based in Alexandra that strives to combat poverty in Alex and the surrounding areas, distributed necessities to the community of Alex on 18 July thanks to donations by The Angel Network and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD).

A total of R20 000 was donated, making it possible for the Social Youth Care to feed the community with a soup kitchen on the day. Along with the food parcels, 150 blankets were also distributed. “We went all over the township, doing door-to-door visits. It was indeed a fruitful day,” said Linda Mbatha, the secretary-general for Social Youth Care.

Mbatha said the day would not have been possible without the support of the Angel Network and the SAJBD. “We work closely with the two organisations, so when we reached out for donations, they were happy to be on board,” said Mbatha.

The national director of SAJBD said, “It means a lot to us to be able to help our fellow citizens in this time of need. It is inspiring to see young people on a voluntary basis stepping up to help others get through these very difficult times.”

Founder of the Angel Network, Glynne Wolman, said it was vital for organisations to work together and lend a helping hand to the needy. “This extends our reach, gives us more credibility and fosters great relationships,” she concluded.
