Short film made in Alex highlights issues faced by local teenagers

ALEXANDRA – The creators of a short film shot in Alexandra are looking for channels with an interest in township-produced films to give them a chance.

A locally directed and produced short film aims to highlight the issues that affect teenagers of Alexandra in this day and age.

The name of the short film is Ama2k – a popular slang word referring to children born in or later than the year 2000.

Director and co-producer of the short film, Lebogang Kgomo (30), said Ama2k addresses drugs, alcohol, unwanted teenage pregnancies, blessers and many other ills of society.

Childhood friends Moliehi Rakhoabe (28) and Lebogang were both born in and attended school in Alexandra township. “I must say that most of the things that are happening in the short film are the thing we grew up seeing and witnessing in Alexandra,” said Moliehi.

Lebogang said she is working hard to make sure that teenagers in Alexandra do not form part of the stereotypes. “If we work together to shut down these stereotypes, Alexandra can still produce people that are rooted in their craft and work hard to do better.”

She explained that to make this production a reality, they had to use both their savings. The two are now looking for support to help distribute their short film.

Their ultimate dream is to see their short film play on a local channel that supports local talent. “If the SABC and Mzansi Magic can give us and our actors a chance, our lives will be forever changed,” said Lebogang.
