IN PICTURES: Alex gogo says words of gratitude fail her as 200 beneficiaries receive food hampers
NPO Youth Social Care will spend June crisscrossing Gauteng townships in service of the destitute and elderly.
“It’s gratifying to see young people taking it upon themselves to care not just for the elderly but the less fortunate as well, especially in these times of great need during Covid-19.”
These were the words of gratitude expressed by Ext 8 resident Tiny Ngobeni, who was one of more than 200 beneficiaries of a food hamper donation at the Altrek Sports Complex in the East Bank section of Alexandra on 13 June.
The donation was hosted by a group of youth from various townships in Gauteng who call themselves Youth Social Care, a Johannesburg-based NPO that has been crisscrossing the various townships to service the elderly and those in need in these communities.
“I don’t have the words fit enough to express my gratitude and those of my fellow beneficiaries for this kindhearted act from our children.”
I take my hat off for these children and hope many more can emulate the selfless work of these youngsters and care for their parents and by that, I don’t just mean their blood parents only but the community in which they live,” said a delighted Ngobeni who sometimes survives through the grace of her neighbours.
“I, my husband and our five grandchildren, will at least have something to eat for a couple of days to come. I often tell my grandchildren that life is like a relay race – you pass the baton. We’re now old and it is the turn of children like these to look after us.”
Youth Social Care secretary Linda Mbatha and chairperson Lindani Ngomane said the food hampers came courtesy of Angels Network and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, who both funded the project.”We’re not done yet. For the whole of June, we shall be crisscrossing the townships in Gauteng delivering food hampers to the needy and elderly. We have already been to some other townships since the beginning of June,” Ngomane added.
Speaking on behalf of councillor Tefo Raphadu, Ward 105 committee member Malebu Mokgabudi, welcomed the selfless work of the youth and urged beneficiaries to pray for them so they can do more.
